Roo currently works at The Natural History Museum & Butterfly House in Southsea. Butterflies appear often in her artwork. For this design, she proposes painting a lion sculpture decorated with 100 butterflies, a recurring motif in her practice. Each butterfly would represent an inspirational woman born in Portsmouth over the past 100 years, with each one labelled with a name and year of birth.
Butterflies act as a strong symbol of growth, transformation and the positive influence of women across generations.
She plans to gather names through an open call, along with a short sentence or memory about each woman. This could be developed further into an added element – possibly a digital extension – sharing these stories. Viewers could access this through a QR code displayed next to the sculpture, linking to an online collection of stories on Instagram.
