Sea of Stories design represents Portsmouth as a city shaped by the sea, heritage and education. The lion symbolises strength, pride and guardianship, reflecting the resilience of the coastal community. On the sea-facing side, Anna has illustrated the historic Mary Rose ship, Southsea Castle and the Spinnaker Tower, highlighting Portsmouth’s maritime legacy from Tudor history to the modern waterfront.
On the opposite side, the Royal Garrison Church is surrounded by poppy fields as a symbol of remembrance and shared memory. The Guildhall and the Norrish Library building represent culture, creativity and the importance of learning within the city.
Seagulls move across the composition to suggest freedom and coastal identity, while palm trees reference Southsea’s distinctive seaside character. Flowing aurora-inspired colours bring a sense of light and energy, symbolising hope and connection between sea and sky.
At the centre of the lion’s face, a radiant sun with solar flares acts as a unifying element, representing life, power and the bright future of Portsmouth. Together, these elements transform the lion into a living landscape of memory, ambition and enduring pride.
