Roar with Us is a collaborative artwork created to raise awareness and celebrate the SEND community at Make at Aldingbourne and across the Portsmouth area. The lion represents pride, strength and inclusivity, with each element chosen for its meaning.
Its sunflower mane represents some disabilities that are hidden, while the glasses and hearing aids highlight those in the community with visual or hearing impairments. The butterflies forming a rainbow infinity symbol represents neurodiversity.
Three hearts display the awareness colours for Epilepsy, Kabuki Syndrome Type 2 and Williams Syndrome. The odd socks in Portsmouth colours acknowledge and support the Down Syndrome community. Makaton hands and symbols show communication, friendship and Portsmouth as a place of belonging.
Ear defenders reflect sensory needs, and the patchwork comfort blanket represents mental health, linking to the projects annual Let’s Get Talking About Suicide event, with each square expressing feelings.
A rainbow butterfly completes the design and symbolises hope and resilience. The words Respect, Love and Acceptance reflect how our SEND community strive to live and be understood.
