Mr Dot’s inspiration comes from growing up around Portsmouth Guildhall, especially during the mid-1980s and early 1990s. At that time, the Guildhall steps became a playground for him and his brothers. A real rite of passage was climbing on the proud lions that sit on top of the plinths. Health and safety was not really considered, and his brother, along with many other children his age, would always take on the challenge of climbing up, despite it being dangerous. It was something they were often told not to do, and many times you would hear the warning shouted: “Do not climb on the lion.
Sadly, his brother passed away eight years ago at the age of 35, and this piece is a tribute to him.
The crackled finish of the lion represents Mr Dot’s limited eyesight and reflects the fractured way he sees through darkness. A single gold handprint has been added as a personal tribute to his brother.
Braille appears on each side of the sculpture, reading “Do not climb on the lion,” echoing those childhood warnings. The base also includes “Portsmouth 100” in braille.
The blue and yellow dots and handprints represent Portsmouth 100, while the white and purple colours are a nod to Portsmouth University.
