Hertha, celebrates the remarkable Portsmouth‑born scientist Hertha Ayrton. One side of the lion shows her as a physicist, known for her ground-breaking work with electricity and for “taming lightning”. The other side presents her as a suffragette, recognising her role in the fight for women’s rights. The front of the platform will read: Inventor, Physicist, Mathematician, Engineer and Suffragette.
Hertha Ayrton achieved far more than can be captured on a sculpture of this size, but the design aims to inspire those unfamiliar with her story to discover her extraordinary legacy.
